Dear
[student],
Spring semester is well under way, but students are still basking
in the memory of January Short Term. There were many trips to
choose from this year. It seemed like there was something for
everyone.
•
London Theatre Tour: Students from Hollins,
Roanoke College, and Cazenovia College saw five plays and musicals,
from Elton John’s smash hit Billy Elliot to the
Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of Comedy of
Errors. They took backstage tours at Drury Lane Theatre
and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.
• Concert Choir Ireland Tour: The weeklong
tour featured choir performances in Dublin, Kilkenny, Killarney,
and Bunratty, with plenty of sightseeing along the way. The
choral music ranged from classical to gospel, from Gershwin
to Gabriel Fauré.
• Service Trip to Mississippi: A group
of students traveled to Mississippi to assist with Katrina Disaster
Relief efforts. Mucking out houses and tearing up moldy carpet
was physically and emotionally demanding work, but the rewards
of helping residents move on with their lives were incalculable.
• Berlin: Every January students travel
to Berlin, one of the world's largest and most vibrant cities.
This year’s group visited a multitude of museums and art
galleries, attended a Berlin Philharmonic concert, went backstage
in the renowned Renaissance Theater, experienced an avant-garde
modern dance performance, and hung out in the Quasimodo Jazz
Cellar.
•
The Art of Spain: Artists and art lovers spent
nearly two weeks in the cities of Madrid and Barcelona, visiting
many museums and galleries. When they weren’t sketching,
they sampled the cuisine, drank in the scenery, and worked on
their Spanish.
Hollins is well known for its January
internship program. This year, as usual,
students spread out across the country for such internships
as:
• Vanity Fair magazine, New York City
• The Washington Times, Washington, D.C.
• National Institutes of Mental Health, Bethesda,
Maryland
• Project Vote Smart, Philipsburg, Montana
• Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, Roanoke
• Pfizer, Inc., Shelbyville, Tennessee
