Colleges of Distinction schools were originally chosen partly due to their excellence in fostering engaged students – students who have the opportunity to take an active role in learning, both in and out of the classroom. Service learning is also of primary importance for Beyond the Books, Student Horizons, Inc.'s newest initiative.

This is the first year of the recognition program, sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the President's Council on Service and Civic Participation, the USA Freedom Corps, and the U.S. Departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development.
