Colleges of Distinction
The Colleges of Distinction (http://www.collegesofdistinction.com)
is a unique group of 200 colleges and universities that excel at 1)
engaging students, 2) providing outstanding teaching, 3) offering
vibrant communities, and 4) producing successful outcomes, the pillars
of a strong and active undergraduate education.
Criteria
A task force of high school counselors, college admissions professionals,
and college administrators developed the criteria for inclusion. The
team went beyond the criteria used by popular college rankings. Instead,
it looked at the total college experience, expanding on the National
Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE).
The task force examined issues that students encounter as they enter
an institution, during their four years, and after graduation. Most
importantly, the chosen Colleges of Distinction schools were found
to produce truly engaged citizens. Read
more about the Four Distinctions.
Mission
As a proponent of the small, engaged four-year college education,
Student Horizons, Inc. launched the Colleges of Distinction initiative
to accomplish two important goals.
First, to provide an alternative to large, commercially-driven ranking
lists. It is a resource for students, parents, and high school counselors
looking for the "right" school and provides other helpful
tools to assist in the daunting college search process.
Second, the initiative provides these 200 exceptional institutions
with an opportunity to showcase their strengths along the Four Distinctions.
It is an avenue to attract prospective students they might not have
otherwise found. Through an eight page profile, contact us feature,
and access to the Colleges of Distinction student and counselor databases,
the Colleges of Distinction attract more qualified prospects to their
institutions.
Since its 2003 launch, the Colleges of Distinction website has grown
to 1.5 million page views a year, and its student database has grown
to 500,000 students.
