Guidebook Overview

Beyond the Books, Student Horizons, Inc.’s newest initiative, is overseeing and promoting the development of the Guide to Service-Learning Colleges and Universities.  This guide will provide a one-stop resource for the college-bound community to research schools who excel in offering experiential learning opportunities.  It will also educate high school counselors and administrators of America's community-based organizations.

Only selected institutions that have demonstrated a significant track record of integrating community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities will be included in the guidebook.

Nominate Your Institution:
While inclusion is important in this endeavor, only nominated institutions that demonstrate a service-learning program that is academically integrated will be included in the guidebook.

Steps for Inclusion:

1) Submit Nomination Form
  • Access nomination form online
  • http://www.beyondthebooks.org/service/service.html
The nomination form is designed to help institutions present a factual description of the scale, scope and goals for service-learning in the context of campus mission and learning goals for students.

2) Review by National Advisory Board
Institutions are selected upon review of their nomination forms by our National Advisory Board. Selected institutions show that they integrate community service with academic study to enrich learning, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities while using a deliberate and planned approach in order to fulfill the standards of service-learning.

Upon selection, institutions will be listed without rankings. They will be organized by state and then based upon the Carnegie Classifications. Each state will include selected institutions separated by Classification categories. This is to ensure that like-institutions will appear in a peer nationwide listing. Another listing will show institutions separated by types of service-learning programs.

A vibrant profile section is available for a one-time participation fee, that we do not foresee having to charge for future versions.  This fee is needed in order to reach distribution and marketing goals, including: gratis distribution to low-income secondary schools, community-based organizations and libraries.

A complementary website (http://www.beyondthebooks.org) will accompany the guidebook as a resource center for students, parents and counselors engaged in the college search and educational process.
