Overview
Student
Horizons, Inc. is convinced that the quality of today’s
undergraduate experience is enhanced by experiential learning:
research projects, internships, community service and service-learning,
study abroad, leadership programs, entrepreneurial training,
and living learning communities.
This experiential curriculum
enhances and augments classroom learning and helps students
develop transferable life skills that are critical for a successful
life after college. The best colleges are those that use the
whole campus experience—in
the classroom and beyond—to promote the connection between
knowledge and action.
Today’s typical college student, ever more complex and
nontraditional, demands a more varied mode of learning. However,
they often don’t know where to begin their college search
or how to find the best choice for their personal situation.
It
is this demand that forms the foundation upon which Beyond
the Books (http://www.beyondthebooks.org) is built. The
goal of this initiative is to assist students in their
search for the college that best fits their needs by:
- Filling the need for a comprehensive informative database
for future and current college students to find unique learning
opportunities that will enhance and define their educational
experience.
- Profiling the colleges and universities in the U.S. who
excel in experiential learning.
- Offering a website for colleges, universities, and independent
programs to increase national exposure of their distinctive
programs.
- Putting this information in one place for quick and easy
access.
Mission:
The mission of Beyond
the Books is to fill the need
for a comprehensive database of information for future and
current college students to learn about the plethora of experiential
learning opportunities available, discover experiential learning
opportunities that will enhance and define their educational
experience, and find schools that promote and focus on experiential
learning. Beyond the Books is committed to publicize
and strengthen experiential learning programs as well as colleges
and universities that excel in providing experiential learning
opportunities.
